Women And Salt : A Life-Saving Innovation

Women And Salt : A Life-Saving Innovation

On the coasts of Guinea, salt has been harvested for centuries, but the wood needed to extract it is starting to run out because it comes from the mangroves that have shrunk to nothing. To combat this scourge, a French NGO, Univers Sel, has introduced a revolutionary technique that consists of recreating mini salt marshes using plastic sheeting to evaporate seawater in the heat of the sun and thus harvest the precious crystal. Women have taken charge of this activity. Since they no longer have to make a fire to evaporate the brine, the benefits they get from it are enormous, both in terms of health and the environment. But perhaps the most important thing is that this innovation allows them to provide a better living for their families and to look to the future with a more serene eye.
