Flight attendant and travel expert, Whytney Rawls, revealed the only acceptable way to ask fellow passengers to swap seats.  In an interview with Travel And Leisure, Rawls shared a number of factors to consider when approaching a fellow flier.  5. Ask At The Gate.  If the flight isn't full, Rawls suggests asking a gate agent for help to reassign you a seat next to your colleague.  4. Be Mindful.  It is important to consider a strangers' situation before asking, whether they are a child, elderly or special needs that require assistance.  3. Be Considerate.  Rawls believes it is imperative not to swap a seat that is not in the same class, whether it's moving up in class, or one with extra leg-room.  2. Be Conscious.  While it is acceptable to ask airline crew for help in this endeavor, it is important not to distract them from other duties by taking your time.  1. No Means No.  If a person says no, Rawls says you must compose yourself and not get upset, regardless of their reasoning, “it's their seat."
