A recent study has shown that maintaining a healthy diet and engaging in regular physical activity can partially protect your liver from the harmful effects of alcohol. As part of the study, researchers found that any amount of daily alcohol consumption or binge drinking increases a person's risk of death from liver damage. However, the study's findings suggest that maintaining a healthy diet and increasing physical activity can significantly reduce that risk, regardless of whether you are a heavy or binge drinker. It found that high levels of physical activity and good diet quality are linked to a lower risk of liver-related death across all drinking patterns. Researchers analyzed data from more than 60,000 participants collected through the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 1984 and 2018. Heavy drinking was defined as over three drinks daily for women and over four for men, and binge drinking as four or more drinks for women or five or more for men in two hours. Results showed that average alcohol intake increased the risk of liver-related death by around 4% in men and 8% in women. The study warned that binge drinking is dangerous for liver health, increasing the risk of death by 52% in men and 2.5 times in women. The study found that physical activity lowered the risk of death by 36% for heavy drinkers and 69% for binge drinkers. It also found that a healthier diet reduced the risk of death by 86% among heavy drinkers and 84% among binge drinkers.
