From time to time, it can be hard to regulate or suppress our emotions due to stress from work or other factors out of our control. However, there are things you can do to regulate your emotions and stop yourself from doing something you may later regret. To begin, attempt to visualize yourself in the future and contemplate how you will reflect on your reaction to the situation in 5 or 10 years. Consider how a loved one would react and their feelings if your response to a situation was driven by your emotions getting the best of you. Another helpful approach is to allocate some personal time to process your emotions and, if needed, jot down your feelings. After processing a situation, try to focus on the positives rather than dwelling on the negatives of a poor outcome. Lastly, engage in mindfulness practices like meditation for even short bursts of time in order to accept your emotions and not feel guilty for them.
