Maryland
Coming in at number one is Maryland, with 187.26 restaurants for every 100,000 people, and almost half of those are fast food restaurants.
Nevada
Ranking number two on the list is the Silver State, with a score of 97.24. Nevada's addition of Zippy's, which is limited to only one other location, Nevada, and Hawaii, distinguishes it from the rest.
Illinois
Home to McDonald's headquarters, according to the school, Illinois is in the top five states for fast food expenditure, with residents spending an average of $1 on fast food per $5 spent on food.
New York
Placed at number four, the city that never sleeps, New York, is tied with Hawaii in having the highest number of fast food joints per capita, despite being known for its lucrative street food selection.
Hawaii
Considered the fifth-fast-food capital of the US, Hawaii is runner-up to Illinois for the most money spent on fast food; this tropical tourist hotspot hosts a variety of fast-food chains.
California
Famous for its scenic coastal views, celeb-spotting hot spots, and the world-renowned In-N-Out burger joint, California is ranked number six on the list, with a score of 84.62.
Ohio
Home to mega-fast food chain Wendy's, Ohio ranks seventh on the list, with 82.42 fast food restaurants per 100,000 people; Ohio receives an overall score of 79.33.
Massachusetts
Dunkin' Donuts headquarters, Massachusetts, earned a score of 74.99, also making it on the list of highest share of spending on fast food restaurants, ranking at number four.
New Mexico
Home to Blake's Lotaburger, New Mexico has earned a score of 73.39; “The Land of Enchantment” has the second-highest percentage of fast food restaurants in the US.
Oklahoma
Last, but not least, coming in with the lower score of 69.76, Oklahoma, known for its onion burgers, “The Sooner State,” is the tenth top consumer of fast food in the US.
